Twitter as a reporting tool.

Comparison of the three different timelines
Twitter plays a very good role in updating the society .Journalists have taken the social network as a tool to spread the news. The first timeline I have used was the timeline of Barry Bateman who is the Eye witness news reporter. Barry Bateman really did a good job with the updates which were straight to the point and relevant to the Marikana massacare story.Every details of the story he tweeted them, he even went far as retweeting other journalists. Information was spread on the social network, debates started on his timeline and before the story went to be broadcast we have already seen it on twitter. The second timeline I have used was the timeline of Cathy Mohlahlana who is the reporter for etv news. She tweeted about the shooting but there were no details of what was really going on but most of the tweets were sub tweeted and you could tell that she was not at the scene. The story broke out on social networks and it was a big story so every journalist had to use that opportunity to report the news. Cathy even went far as updating it on her facebook page this showed the power of social networks in the Journalism industry. The third timeline is Hajra Omarjee timeline who is a senior political reporter at ETV news. Her timeline was full of the Lomnin shooting this showed that it something political and it is close to her heart. She updated about the shooting to the death and the politicians who came to the scene, even the television reporters were there to get the visuals of the strike. Her timeline to me is the one which is the best one and it had all the news and information that people needed to know. Recently she has been updating about the court case in Garankuwa .Twitter as a Journalism tool.Media practioners need to familiarise themselves with the social networks. Twitter is the new way of reporting the news. It easy, fast and cheap to report the news. The twitter social network was also used last year to report what happened in Libya .Most Journalists saw the news on twitter and they then did a follow up on the story. It was then that they tried to stop people from using social networks. Even media houses have now went as far as having twitter handles reporting the news and Journalists from around the world are now on twitter.

Citizien Journalism . Assignment

Citizen Journalism has taken over the Journalism industry. The new media social networks are now a replacement to the publication and going to online sites to read more about stories. Citizen Journalists do not need to have a journalism qualification they need to have a phone and social networks and they qualify as journalists.
Citizen journalism involves members of the public actively participating in reporting, analyzing and contributing to news and information. Many examples of citizen journalism include personal blogs, independent news sites, mailings, personal broadcasting and news content captures on mobile devices.
Citizen Journalism also contribute positively in the industry, the news now travel faster and as a budding journalist I have found it easy to use this type of journalism with blogs, and twitter. Recently we saw how this kind of journalism helps us. The twitter was buzzing with tweets updating us about the  Marikana mascare. We learnt about it before it was published in the newspapers. Citizien Journalism is the new trend in the industry. Journalists already in the industry have written about the citizen journalism with positive feedback.
According to Rebecca a journalists she said:” I think that the concept of citizen journalism is a good thing. For countries like Malaysia, where news is so highly controlled by the government, news sites developed from blogs has really allowed for freedom of speech. I think this form of journalism is really going to change the way we consume broadcast journalism because for the first time, we as the audience are able to participate. This to me is a big step for the journalism industry as a whole. No longer are just a select group of people allowed to broadcast their opinions on an issue. Through citizen journalism, I fell that we are now able to discuss a wider range of issues that affect us as a society. I think citizen journalism, is the true future of broadcast journalism and I for one can’t wait to see the changes that it is going to make to traditional ideas of journalism.”
Citizen Journalism has brought change in the industry and has made news to be easily accessible to the public and the public has a chance to broadcast the news that Journalists do not have a clue about. It is now for journalists to get stories from the social networks and they can do a follow up on the stories. I believe that we need to accept that it is here to stay and then familiarize ourselves with it.

opinion piece. New media 3rd edition , Terry flew

Opinion piece

New Media Terry Flew 3rd edition

New Media by  3rd Edition by Terry flew 3rd edition is a good book , which gives good information about the new media and the history of the internet and how one can use this new media. As a budding Journalist I found it interesting especially in these days of new media taking over in our industry. It tackles the issues of “new media” and the history of internet which I found to be interesting and informative. Although the book can bore you halfway with the way of writing it is too formal for me I think maybe the writer should write the book bearing in mind the level of the readers of the book.

I learnt a lot from the book especially chapter two of the book about the digital copyright, I didn’t know that the work you find online has been copyrighted and that I should be careful when using it .The chapters on the book they give understanding of the media that we use eg Facebook, internet and instant messaging that is widely used these days.

The chapters I have read were informative and showed that the writer of book really did his research on the topics covered. I would recommend the book to anyone.

Investigating the online news and Journalism that exist in South Africa today
The online news industry is dominating the journalism industry these days. Print is slightly losing it touch. Most print newspapers have also taken the online path as they now have online publications. The question is how are they going to save print from online?  Well that a story for another day but today my main focus is on the different online sites that we have in this country to name a few we have news24, IOL, the eye witness news and many more .
The question I had been asking during this investigation was how the layout of the publication is, do they use multimedia.
NEWS24
The publication has a catchy bright layout with breaking stories as pop us on top of the page. It also has different features on it from entertainment, jobs, property and special report. As a reader when you on the site you don’t fell bored and logout because of the lack of entertainment on their page. They use videos and pictures that shows they use multimedia
IOL NEWS
I found the site boring the layout did not attract me as the reader; I felt it is too colorful as we know too much of something spoils things. I saw the pop ads appearing while reading stories and I found that irritating .The content of the site I liked it , it has different  features  like the  home column for news, health, family , food and drinks and also opinion pieces . I found news24 and IOL entertaining although they might lack somewhere but they not all bad .The multimedia they use is videos and pictures.

Eye witness news
I really found the site boring and dull the multimedia lacks mostly they use pictures not videos. The site main focus is on breaking news unlike news24 which also has soft stories.  They do not have ads popping up while one is reading the stories which can make you end up losing interest in the stories.

In conclusion to my research I think there is still more to be done on these to attract us. The online journalism is the way forward
